Veteran Flames defenseman sent to Wranglers

The Calgary Flames recently announced that veteran defenseman Tyson Barrie would be sent to the AHL for a conditioning stint.

Barrie practiced with the Calgary Wranglers on Friday and was grateful for the opportunity to get back on the ice and hopefully play in a few games.

However, according to early pregame notes from the Wranglers’ Saturday game against the San Diego Gulls, he is not in the lineup.

As a free agent, Barrie agreed to a contract with the Flames on October 3 and played in nine of the team’s first 17 games, scoring one goal, before becoming a scratch after November 12.

Interestingly, he hasn’t skated in the AHL since the 2013-14 season, when he played with the Lake Erie Monsters. In his limited time in the minors, 93 games, Barrie scored 12 goals and 64 points.

Originally a third-round pick (64th overall) of the Colorado Avalanche in 2009, he played 818 games in the NHL with 110 goals, 397 assists and 507 points.

Historically, Barrie is the 57th player on both Alberta teams, having skated with the Edmonton Oilers from 2021 to 2023. He also wears clothing for the Nashville Predators and Toronto Maple Leafs.
