Mets’ Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor discuss Pete Alonso’s free agency and Juan Soto signing

Mets All-Stars Brandon Nimmo And Francisco Lindor attended Amazin’ Day at Citi Field on Saturday and spoke with the media about the team’s two biggest offseason storylines:

Pete AlonsoFree agency and Juan Soto sign up to play in Queens.

“I would love to have Pete back with us,” Nimmo told reporters. “But I also understand that it’s not me who makes these decisions and that it’s between Pete and our front office and David [Stearns] And Steve [Cohen]. From what I understand, there was a lot of discussion between them. I still hope we sign it.

“Even though that’s the case, we’re really happy with what we’ve done this offseason. I think we’ve made our team a better team. Obviously, I love Pete. I’ve been with him for a long time, so I would love to see it again. And so we’ll see how it all plays out in the days and weeks to come.

Lindor was asked if he was “surprised” that Alonso wasn’t back with the team, saying he thought the first baseman was and should take his time making an important decision like this one.

“Surprised? I can’t be surprised by someone’s decision. I mean, it’s their decision,” Lindor said. “Pete should maximize. Pete should make the best decision for himself and his family. It’s a tough question because it’s something that asks, ‘Am I surprised by someone’s thoughts?’

“Pete’s been here since I’ve been here, he’s been here before me. So yeah, it would be different if he went somewhere else. Yeah, it’ll be different, for sure. I think he should take his time. I thinks he should make the best decision for himself and not feel like he made a rushed decision, and I’m sure he will. He will seek the advice of his wife and family and. then make the best decision for himself. should, he deserves it.”

Lindor also said he sent a message to Alonso saying, “I’m thinking of you, I hope you’re doing well.”

While Alonso has yet to sign with a club, SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino reported after the Mets signed. Jesse Winker that they expect Alonso to sign elsewhere. Martino reported on Jan. 23 that discussions between Alonso and the Toronto Blue Jays are “moving forward,” although they “are not yet complete and there is no guarantee that they will get there.”

On signing Soto

Lindor and Nimmo were then asked about their reactions to the news of Soto signing with the Mets, and both expressed excitement about him joining the team.

“I was happy and then I was like ‘damn,’ this is great,” Lindor said. “I was happy for him and his family too, and the organization. I can’t want to be a teammate of his for the next seven years and then look forward to watching him from home.”

“Very excited, very excited to be with Soto,” Nimmo said. “Obviously, I’ve been playing against him for a long time now. Incredible hitter, incredible athlete. I’m so happy we won that bidding war and got him to the orange and blue. I’m excited. He He’s going to be in the middle of our lineup and it’s going to be really exciting to see what he can do.

Winker also talked about the Mets signing Soto and can’t wait to have a front-row seat to watch him play and learn from the superstar.

“Everything he’s done in his career speaks for itself,” Winker said. “Great player, electric player. I can’t wait to see how he works every day. Like you said, he’s a lefty and he’s one of the best hitters in baseball. I can see that for a long time. seat. it will be cool.

“Obviously you combine him with Lindor, who is also coming off an MVP-type season. It’s going to be really fun to watch them both. I’ve learned so much from Francisco, so I’m grateful to be here, c It’s safe.”
