Cowboys Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin has spoken. And he’s not happy.
In a video posted Saturday eveningIrvin aired his grievances over the team’s decision to make Brian Schottenheimer the next head coach.
“We lost an opportunity here,” Irvin said. “I was pushing for Deion Sanders to be the next coach. And I’m still ten toes away from that push.”
Irvin isn’t happy that the Cowboys are sitting at home watching a few division rivals compete for a spot in the Super Bowl.
“We have two NFC East teams in the NFC championship game playing tomorrow,” Irvin said. “All eyes on them. The Eagles of Philadelphia and the commanders of Washington. Our enemies on every front…and [in] A position we haven’t held in 30 fucking years. “
He stressed that he had no problem with Schottenheimer. He opposes the idea of promoting someone from the last coaching staff.
“You’re bringing in someone who was already in there as a head coach,” Irvin said. “You lose things out there that you can’t get back, that I worry about.”
Irvin believes the Cowboys need a new voice to instill change.
“I know what we needed,” Irvin said. “They don’t have a curfew. They don’t have discipline. We were fourth in penalties this year. So how do you fix yourself? … How do you do that when you’re coming from the inside? “
Irvin said the Cowboys don’t meet Saturday night before games. He passionately impressed upon the importance of doing so.
He’s also concerned that if Schottenheimer tries to crack down, the players will balk because they’ll think “we got you the job.”
Irvin, while doing his best to give Schottenheimer the benefit of the doubt, has concerns regarding Schottenheimer’s travel around the league.
“He played basketball in the NFL,” Irvin said. “He’s been NBA-ing in the NFL. I call it bouncing off about 15 other teams.”
The bottom line, from Irvin’s perspective, is this: He believes that America’s Team America is on the verge of losing America.
“We’re about ready to have our nickname ripped off our backs,” Irvin said.
He ultimately summed up his experience last week like this: “sick with the flu, then hit with Doo-Doo.”
Flu or not, a lot of Cowboys fans are feeling the doo-doo right now.
