Quinn Hughes scored twice and the Vancouver cannucks beat Washington 2-1 at the head of the NHL on Saturday evening, keeping the capital star Alex Ovechkin 20 goals less to break the record of the Wayne Gretzky League.
Hughes scored five goals and two assists in a five -point sequence.
Defender Filip Hronek added two assists and Kevin Lankinen stopped 32 shots.
Pierre-Luc Dubois scored for Washington, capping the scoring halfway from the third. Charlie Lindgren made 23 stops for the capital.
Capitals: Ovechkin tested Lankinen just over four minutes after the start of the game when he launched a rocket from the top of the circle of a donation game. Lankinen put his elbow on the path of the washer, sending it to the net. Thursday evening, Ovechkin scored an empty net for his 875th NHL goal. Gretzky had 894.
Canucks: coach Rick Tocchet mixed his front lines, playing the Elias Pettersson star center with the wingers Nils Hoglander and Linus Karlsson and moves Pius Suter to skate between Jake Debrusk and Conor Garland. Defender Elias Pettersson, called from the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League, played his first NHL match.
Lindgren was on the way to the bench with just over a minute to go to the match when the winger of the Canucks, Danton Heinen, sailed to the Washington net. The goalkeeper swam back and plunged to make a backup of gloves.
Hughes has 57 career goals to equalize Ed Jovanovski for the sixth among the Canucks.
